The Hargreaves Foundation supports New Meaning Foundation

August 2025

The trustees of the Hargreaves Foundation are pleased to announce that funding has been awarded to New Meaning Foundation, a charity based at Waterbeach Barracks in Cambridgeshire that transforms the lives of young people aged 14–24 who have struggled in mainstream education. Through vocational training, academic support and life skills, it offers an alternative pathway for those facing learning difficulties, mental health challenges and socio-economic disadvantage.

Only 8.9% of pupils with an Education, Health and Care Plan progress to higher education by the age of 19, compared with 51.2% of pupils without special educational needs. Young people with learning difficulties are also far less likely to find work, leaving many at risk of disengagement, unemployment and social exclusion without the right support.

The funding will allow New Meaning Foundation to purchase a Liftroller E-Mover, a motorised lifting device that will be used in its modular housing projects. As Construction Technician Trainees, learners earn a Living Wage while building sustainable homes for people experiencing homelessness, and many go on to permanent employment. At present, heavy panels, timbers and steel components must be lifted manually, which is slow and physically demanding. The new equipment will make the work safer and more efficient, while giving trainees hands-on experience with professional-grade machinery. They will learn vital safety practices early in their training, building the skills and confidence to start a career in the construction industry.
